Are there Limitations to Internet Marketing

Some people believe that marketing on the internet is the only future for advertising, but there are restrictions on online market that everyone has to face. Although online advertising is a great way to reach many people and a very cheap advertising option, be aware of how limited it can be, as this can help you target your marketing campaigns more precisely and improve your bottom line.

A major constraint with the Internet, is that people have come to view it similarly as they do the television. Nobody wants to pay attention to the advertising, just like on the T.V. and in the case of internet advertising, they are becoming blind to the fact that the advertising is even there. This is easily demonstrated by the way that banner advertising has become all but ineffectual over recent years. This means that you almost have to use under-handed methods in order to get your advertising noticed. Certainly, your advertising must become more imaginative.

Many techniques of online advertising are based on other website owners placing links or graphics, that in turn are connected to your site, on their sites. This link exchange works very well if you don’t mind hosting reciprocal links on your site. Most of these sites do not want to link to your site without a link back, in return. The problem here is that a couple links or picture adverts do not look to bad, but when you start to add dozens of them, you can make your site a bit messy, if not down-right impossible to make any sense out of.

Another of these internet advertising limitations relates to Internet search engines. Search engines work on the principle of how well your site corresponds, or matches, that of the request of the searcher. This is not an exact science, but it has to do with what words you have in your title, metadata and text on your own website – or, keywords.

Maybe you have heard of keywords, or SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, these the most popular subjects in the Internet marketing today, and just about anyone with a website – wants their site optimized for the search engines. Basically, SEO is the practice of using particular, or “key” words an optimum number of times on your site, so that search engines will consistently give it a high rank, provided you have got the formula right.

The problem here, is that writing for search engines means you’re not writing for people, or human eye-balls, that visit your site. If the page is too heavy on the keywords, or too heavily reliant on SEO optimisation results, then they are aiming at the sensibilities of a machine reading it and not a human. More often than not, these sites are not very reader friendly and just don’t “read” right.

Today’s readers are becoming savvy to this and are becoming quick to click away from such pages, to look for something that reads more “real”, or personable.

Another limitation is that there is no way to actually “make” people sign up to your mailing list, they actually must want to do so. Therefore, your marketing strategies must be creative, if not inventive, in order to first grab the attention of that prospective customer. Then again, those who do in fact sign up to your mailing list, are usually the clients who are very interested in what you offer and will buy from you, at the very least – return again.

The best way to get your prospective clients to sign up for whatever it is you are offering, is good, solid, up-to-date and relevant content.

In this way you will be able to overcome some of the limitations to internet marketing.
